An English-Chinese Translation Report Of The Reunion (Chapters 1-6)

This is a translation practice report on the E-C translation of The Reunion(Chapters1-6)by Megan Quinn.The author is a young American writer.The Reunion is her latest romantic comedy novel,which tells the story of three siblings planning their parents’ 50 th anniversary party and facing love,competition,and the end of the memory of the childhood.This book ranked the first in the contemporary literature category and second in the romance novel category on Amazon’s book ranking for two months after it was published.Through reading,the translator can learn about foster family life,customs,and regional characteristics.The translator translated over 19,000 words from Chapters one to six of the novel.In the process of translation,the translator encountered the following two problems:first,at the lexical level,they are proper nouns,part of speech conversion and word extension;the second is at the syntactic level,including the translation of attributive clauses and long difficult sentences.To solve the above problems,the translator adopted the corresponding translation methods.In terms of vocabulary,the translator adopted the translation method of taking the established names,transliteration method to solve the problems of proper nouns translation,conversion of part of speech,choice of word’s meaning;in terms of syntax,the translator adopted the combination,division,as well as the method of reconstructing the sentence structure to solve the translation problem of attributive clause,long difficult sentences.This translation practice provided the translator with an exposure to western culture and different expressions.It is hoped that this practice report can bring some help to those involved in novel translation,and it could be used as a reference for other translators.
