This paper examines the flatness of Henri Matisse’s cut-out works,analyzing his artistic process and evolution.Matisse was a prolific artist who explored various art forms throughout his career,and his consistent focus on simplicity and directness is a central aspect of his style.The paper explores Matisse’s search for inspiration in different cultures and traces his artistic development,culminating in his cut-out works of the1930 s and 1940 s.Chapter Two examines Matisse’s exploration of cut-out art during this period,while the third chapter analyzes his cut-out works from the perspective of unity between line and color,as well as balance and completeness through book design.By analyzing Matisse’s classic cut-out works in depth,this paper provides a comprehensive understanding of his artistic process and style.The final chapter compares Matisse’s flatness in his cutout works with Greenberg’s theory of flatness,and discusses the influence of Matisse’s cut-out works on his contemporaries.Through research on the history of European traditional paper cutting,this paper highlights Matisse’s significant contribution to contemporary art.
