A Study On The Image Of Young Farmers In Contemporary Fiction

Contemporary novels have portrayed many young peasants,who reveal not only their personal qualities,but also the traditional cultural factors of Chinese peasants,and reflect the spirit of the times and the changes in social history and culture.To a certain extent,young farmers even represent the future direction of rural development.The image of young farmers in contemporary novels can be divided into three stages in chronological order: the rural novels of the “Seventeen Years” period take major changes as the background,and young farmers show different outlooks on life and values according to their class positions;the rural novels of the reform and opening-up period,the main topic is “struggle”,and young peasants gradually diverge into two types,“keep the land” and “leave”,in the face of the great changes and development of the country,and their character and behavior characteristics are also more prominent.After the new century,the images of young farmers have emerged with different value choices of “devotion” and “self”,and the countryside novels have become more concerned with the inner struggles and choices of young farmers under the new era of development and change.The combination of personal destiny and the times,the shift from public to private values,and the change in the young people’s attitude toward self-perception have made the image of young farmers richer and more distinct in the past seven decades.Whether it is the enrichment and dailyization of novel topics or the expansion of the image of spiritual mentors,all of them focus on the more diverse image of young farmers.The reason for such a development is,firstly,the change of land policy,which pushes young peasants to change and emerge in response to the times;and secondly,the writers’ subjectivity,whose insistence and intellectual perspective are inevitably projected onto the characters,which becomes an important motive for the change of the image of young peasants.As an important part of the gallery of peasant images in contemporary literature,the diverse and changing images of young peasants show the development and changes of urban and rural areas in the tide of the changing times,the growth and changes of individual peasant’s fate and heart have made an important contribution to the enrichment and expansion of the contemporary peasant image and provided a strong support for the flourishing of vernacular novels.
