| Interview programs involve news and current affairs, social life, emotional talk and other types of programs, which are widely welcomed in China for meeting the psychological needs of audiences to "know people and things" and have unique social significance. In recent years, media convergence has become deeper and deeper, and Interview programs are constantly innovated with advanced technology and various forms of communication, and different types of Interview programs are showing diversified program styles. However, regardless of the type of interview programs, the host needs to achieve the purpose of conversation through verbal communication with the interviewed guests in a limited time, and the host’s verbal communication ability has become a key factor that can affect the audience’s enjoyment and the program’s ratings. In China, research on both conversation analysis and Interview programs has achieved certain results, but the intersection of the two is still weak, and not many studies have been conducted on Interview programs from the perspective of conversation analysis.Using conversation analysis theory to study the conversational characteristics of Interview programs can help explore the nature of conversation in a deeper way.In interviews, supportive verbal feedback is a speech act that occurs more frequently and directly affects the communicative effect of conversation. In order to achieve the purpose of the interview, the moderator must use supportive verbal feedback at the right time,so that the guest can hold the talk wheel and get more in-depth content related to the interview topic, and the interviewee will not feel like "talking to himself".However, many presenters are limited to the questions they ask and do not give feedback to the interviewees’ expressions, which makes the interview not as effective as expected. In this thesis,we use theories related to conversation analysis to study the phenomenon of supportive verbal feedback in the process of Interview program conversation, and explore how the Interview program hosts use supportive verbal feedback to organize the conversation and advance the process of the show, helping us to reveal the essence of language.Since its inception in 2017,host Chen Xiaonan has interviewed more than 30 "ordinary" guests with special experiences, and has chosen a wide range of topics.Chen Xiaonan uses supportive verbal feedback frequently in the interview process, creating a good communication atmosphere while enabling the guests to open up and tell their unique stories. This thesis takes a total of 32 episodes of Talking to Strangers over four seasons as the main research object, compiles typical cases from detailed corpus texts, studies the strengths and weaknesses of interview program hosts’ use of supportive verbal feedback, and proposes ways to improve the use of feedback.First,we construct a basic cognition, give a general overview of interview programs and the phenomenon of supportive verbal feedback, and further clarify the main research object.Only on the basis of understanding the current development status of interview programs and clarifying the phenomenon of verbal feedback, combined with the originality of the program can we further conduct a conversational analysis of the program in order to deeply study the moderator’s use of supportive verbal feedback.Secondly, focusing on the main research object,we analyze the program’s conversational characteristics closely to the topic.By summarizing the conversational characteristics of the program,we can clarify why the host Chen Xiaonan uses supportive verbal feedback in the program to achieve the desired effect.Again, the research proposition is implemented to outline the structural features of supportive verbal feedback in the interview program, and the use of the phenomenon is systematically examined in relation to the research subjects. Finally,by analyzing the excellent use of the moderator’s supportive verbal feedback in the main case,Talking to Strangers, the study concludes with a comparative analysis of the current lack of ability of many Interview program moderators to use verbal feedback, mainly in terms of just being the "recipient" and preferring to be the "outsider The two aspects of "outsider".By summarizing the dilemma,we aim to provide specific strategies to improve the use of supportive verbal feedback for interview program hosts. On the one hand, the moderator should consolidate the theoretical foundation, find the right time and take the right proportion during the conversation, seize the key content and encourage the guest to hold the right to speak;on the other hand, the moderator should not overuse supportive verbal feedback, but build an equal and pleasant communication atmosphere under the principles of focused listening and cooperation. The author hopes that the analysis and research in this thesis can provide new ideas for the majority of interview program hosts in the use of language in the conversation process, and help the innovative development of interview programs in the new media era. |
