The Fifteen Little Heroes is a scientific adventure novel translated by Liang Qichao in 1902 and first published in Xinmin Congbao,No.2.After the failure of the Hundred Days Reform,Liang Qichao translated and introduced the Japanese writer Shibashiro’s Fortuitous Meeting as a precursor of the revolution in the novel industry. In order to realize the ideal of saving the country and reforming the people,Liang Qichao gradually put the revolutionary inspiration of the novel world into practice, and together with Luo Pu,he translated the Japanese translation of The Fifteen Little Heroes, hoping to use the novel to propagate political views and open up the people’s wisdom,so as to achieve the purpose of enlightening and reforming the nation.Under the influence of his political ideology,Liang Qichao’s perception of the function of novels continued to mature. At one point,he elevated the status of novels to the highest level and, under the influence of his personal consciousness, chose to use political novels to propagate political views and enlighten the people. In order to realize the ideal of change people and to make up for the shortage of national spirit,Liang Qichao began to try to translate scientific adventure novels and to attract the public with interesting scientific adventure novels, and then to lay a mass foundation for the idea of changing people. The translation of The Fifteen Little Heroes is a manifestation of his exploration of the path of fiction to save the country. The translation of The Fifteen Little Heroes was made by Liang Qichao with reference to The Fifteen Young Men.In order to realize his political ideals,Liang Qichao changed and adjusted the content of the novel.Taking his own political needs as a starting point,Liang added poems at the beginning and end of each chapter to summarize, added post-translation to express his political views, and deleted astronomy and science content to highlight the political theme. He changed the image of Western teenagers, rewrote the age and identity of female characters, and inspired the nation to become a "new nation" with advanced thinking by the good qualities of the novel’s characters. After the novel was translated by him,it showed the characteristics of " Hero Translation ","replacement of politics with science",and "preservation of literature".As a "tool" for Liang Qichao’s enlightenment of the people,The Fifteen Little Heroes has a modern meaning in terms of the novel’s content and medium of communication.Liang Qichao translated the novel in a mixture of Chinese and white, introduced advanced Western vocabulary, constructed a modern discourse, conveyed modern thinking to the nation with scientific and political contents, and thus promoted the awakening of national modernity. The press,as a new communication medium, promoted the introduction, translation, and dissemination of translated novels in the late Qing Dynasty, fostering the creation of an enlightened public space, and laying a good foundation for the development of Chinese modernity.
