When the French Revolution broke out in 1789,the third class, together with the first class and the masses, overthrew the original old regime and formed a new revolutionary government, which allowed the Enlightenment thought to be applied to political practice.French society became a stage for the political ideals of revolutionaries to display.A series of ideological liberation movements led by them impacted Catholicism, which had always been closely related to the daily life of French people. However, the ideal, secularity and popular sovereignty advocated by the Enlightenment thought differed greatly from the piety, supremacy of the church and parishioner identity propagated by the Catholic Church. In the early stage of the revolution, conflicts often broke out between the two in different forms. Both the Constituent Assembly government and the Mountain Party government have tried and failed to defuse such conflicts through government-level religious policies. After the Fall of Maximilien Robespierre, the political and economic contradictions between Catholicism and French society became more prominent, threatening the rule of Thermidor Party. The Thermidor Party itself was a loose political alliance, temporarily united only by fear of the Robespierre faction, divided into atheists and plainites. Many of Thermidor’s plainites advocated religious tolerance, arguing that previous religious policies were out of touch with French reality. On the other are the more radical atheists, whose members believe that to carry the revolution to its end,all religion must be eliminated. The struggle between the two groups ended with the plain group completely controlling the Thermidor Party government, and the policy of freedom of belief became the consensus of the Thermidor Party government and was carried out smoothly.Under the leadership of the Plain of religious thought,Thermo first began to crack down on religious-based crime,as a deterrent to counter-revolutionary forces who wanted to incite violence.Second, within the boundaries of the law,the Thermidor government implemented measures to maintain the freedom of all legal religious activities, creating a relaxed social atmosphere.Again, when dealing with the clergy, the Thermidor government no longer forced all clergy to take a public oath of loyalty to the revolution and to separate themselves from the Church.Instead,it simply required clergy to abide by the existing law, thus trying to win the support of the religious people for the Thermidor government. Finally, the Thermidor government encouraged people to pay more attention to the family in order to maintain social stability, the most direct expression of which was the strong support for the family creed of Theophilanthropists.Through a series of reforms, the Thermoon government created a more relaxed religious atmosphere, improved its own ruling environment, and attacked the clerical forces in other regions.Later, the domestic stability of Bonaparte’s foreign wars was also due to the contribution of the Thermoon party. However, these religious policies implemented by the Thermonuclear government also had some shortcomings. For example,Thermonuclear Party overindulged the religious forces, which caused the religious forces to attack the revolution in some areas, and also led to the passive resistance of some revolutionary masses to the religious policies. In foreign countries, the religious freedom policy forcibly implemented by the Thermonuclear government in the occupied areas also provoked the anti-French movement in the newly conquered areas.
