As the first Wuxia novel,Shu Jian En Chou Lu got popular among Wuxia fiction lovers after its publication. The main reason is that the story content is novel and the plot is exciting. What impresses readers most is the unique Chinese Wuxia culture hidden in the novels.Wuxia culture includes "Wu" and "Xia".The former mainly includes martial arts moves and Qixue kungfu, while the latter covers four aspects:national spirit, forms of address, interpersonal relationship and way of act. Many scholars in China have tried to explore the English version of Shu Jian En Chou Lu on the linguistic level. However, translation is not only the conversion from one language to another.More importantly,it is the communication and dissemination between different cultures. Therefore, translation should not only consider the linguistic factors, but the cultural factors behind the language.According to Susan Bassnett’s cultural translation theory, culture is the translation unit, and cultural factors should be considered in translation. This paper intends to explore the status quo of the translation of kungfu and Xia spirit in Graham Earnshaw’s translation from the perspective of cultural translation theory.Based on the perspective of cultural translation theory, this paper mainly studies the following questions:(1)What is the theoretical guiding role of Bassnett’s cultural translation theory in the translation of martial arts novels?(2)When translating Wuxia culture with Chinese characteristics, what kind of translation methods should a translator choose to allow readers to experience, absorb and understand foreign culture while interpreting the source language culture?(3)What is inspiration of translation of Wuxia culture embedded in Shu Jian En Chou Lu to spread Chinese culture and promote cultural exchanges between China and the West? The thesis aims to explore the translation of kungfu and Xia spirit hidden in Graham Earnshaw’s translation, analyze the translation methods adopted by the translator, such as literal translation, transliteration, omission, free translation, etc.,the effect of translation, and the reasons for the gains and losses of the translation, and offer related translation suggestions. Finally, the paper will provide a theoretical basis for the translation of Wuxia culture, and promote cultural exchanges. |
