In the context of accelerated ageing of the population, protecting the mental health of the elderly has become a top priority.A large number of studies have shown that the elderly with a high education level tend to benefit from a wider network of relationships and rich leisure life,so people generally believe that the elderly with a high education level are less likely to suffer from mental problems. However, some studies have shown that the older people with higher education level are more likely to suffer from depression. In view of the fact that existing studies are based on crosssectional data, and different studies treat missing values in different ways, there is no clear conclusion on the impact of education level on the mental health status of the elderly. This thesis uses tracking data from CHARLS to explore the impact of education on mental health of the elderly. In view of the large number of missing values in the tracking data, and the imputation of missing data will greatly affect the scientific validity of the model, this thesis firstly makes comprehensive use of machine learning and statistical methods to fill missing values, and then establishes the least squares estimation model for the samples to explore the direct influence of education level on the mental health status of the elderly.Furthermore, the mediating effect analysis of the samples are carried out to further explore the indirect influence of education level on the mental health status of the elderly.Based on the above research, this thesis draws the following conclusions:(1)In the tracking data, education level has a significant impact on the mental health status of the elderly;(2)The influence of education level on mental health status of the elderly has a time effect;(3)Educational level can indirectly affect the mental health status of the elderly by influencing self-assessment of health. At last, this thesis makes a theoretical analysis of the three conclusions produced by the research and gives corresponding suggestions to help improve the mental health of the elderly and promote the development of healthy ageing.
