| As a task on Chinese to English translation of A Glimpse of the Manchus Lives(Excerpts),the report takes Susan Bassnett’s cultural approach as the theoretical framework and combines Manchu characteristics for rendering.The report consists of four chapters.The first chapter provides the task background,displaying a full picture of the report.Chapter two scans for the text features and ensures the practicability of the cultural approach.It details the translation process,carries out text analysis and feature classification,such as: material culture,spiritual culture and social culture,folk literature,and gastronomic writing,and so on.The author also exemplifies the challenges posed by different cultural settings.In Chapter three,based on the orientation of source language and target language,the author selects typical cases such as imperial menu,wedding customs,tobacco and drinking etiquette,and shamanic experience.Combining cultural approach,the translation techniques are demonstrated at the lexical and stylistic levels.Methods such as “substitution,”“omission and compensation,” “amplification,” “interpretation,” and “transliteration”are integrated with context and language functions.The task is reflected and summarized in Chapter four.The Manchu constitutes the symbol of the last imperial dynasty which makes its culture an enjoyable material.This report aims to explore translation strategies under the guidance of cultural approach,highlighting the compatibility between ethnic minority culture and English translation,in order to provide references for a broader range of applications and give innovative answers. |
