On the basis of theories related to second language learning motivation both domestically and internationally,as well as theories related to Chinese as a second language learning motivation,the article divides Chinese learning motivation into two categories: source motivation and target motivation.Source motivation includes interest motivation,environment motivation,and passive motivation,while target motivation includes integration motivation,tool motivation,and improvement motivation.The article takes international students from 11 different universities in Guangxi as the research object,and uses questionnaire survey,interview,and data analysis methods to investigate their Chinese language learning motivation.It explores the types and characteristics of Chinese language learning motivation among international students from Guangxi who come to China,analyzes the differences in their learning motivation in gender,tuition fees,and confidence dimensions,and identifies the changing patterns and reasons of international students’ Chinese language learning motivation.Research has found that,the overall motivation of international students in Guangxi for Chinese language learning is at a moderate level,with the intensity of goal based motivation being higher than that of origin based motivation.Among them,tool based and improvement based sub motivation perform strongly.In terms of dimensional differences,in terms of gender dimensions,the intensity of female learning motivation is higher than that of males,and males and females show significant differences in interest and instrumental sub motivation;In terms of tuition fees,the overall motivation intensity of Chinese language learning among scholarship students is higher than that of self funded students,and the integrated sub motivation of self funded students is more prominent;In terms of confidence dimension,learning confidence will promote the enhancement of learning motivation,with interest based and environment based sub motivation being more closely related to learning confidence.In terms of motivation changes,the types of learning motivation changes for international students in Guangxi can be mainly divided into four categories: continuous upward,continuous downward,first upward then downward,and first downward then upward.There are three factors that affect their learning motivation changes: self,teacher,and peer factors.Finally,based on the investigation and analysis,combined with one’s own experience in international Chinese language teaching,the article proposes specific suggestions on stimulating and maintaining learners’ Chinese language learning motivation from both micro and macro levels. |
