| New farmers are the main force of agricultural development,and the new farmers’ identity in the new era has special significance.The news media carry the mission of publicizing and shaping the identity of new farmers.Framing,like metaphor,is a kind of metaphorical thinking and is often used as a discourse means of media reports.Therefore,the combination of conceptual metaphor and framing can reveal the way in which the news media shape the identity of new farmers from the cognitive mechanism of the audience.Based on conceptual metaphor and framing theory,this thesis forms the metaphorical framing theory and integrates the identity construction theory to explore the identities of new farmers constructed by official news media through metaphorical frames.This thesis uses a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods to establish a corpus and use the Metaphor Identification Procedure to identify frames.This thesis tries to answer the following questions:(1)What are the metaphorical surface frames expressed through the metaphorical words used by China central media?How are the different aspects of agricultural development presented through the metaphorical frames?(2)How does the news media use metaphorical lexical markers to present the identities of new farmers and what are the values advocated by the interaction between different metaphorical surface frames?(3)What kinds of new farmer identities have been constructed under the interaction of different frames?The major findings are as follows:(1)China central media mainly use 12 metaphorical surface frames,including JOURNEY Frame,WAR Frame,CONTAINER Frame,PLANT Frame,BUILDING Frame,HUMAN Frame,MACHINE Frame,BUSINESS Frame,FARMING Frame,FAMILY Frame,STAGE Frame and DISEASE Frame.The 12 metaphorical surface frames present five aspects of agricultural development,namely the expansion of the new farmer group,the development of new agriculture,the development of agricultural science and technology,environmental protection and Rural Revitalization.In the context of different agricultural aspects,different identities of new farmers are constructed through the metaphorical surface frames.(2)Five values are activated by 12 metaphorical surface frames: collectivism,struggle spirit,scientific and technological innovation spirit,ecologism and common prosperity spirit.And there are many metaphorical words related to the gender and educational background of the new farmers in reports.Studying the gender and education levels involved in identity construction theory on the basis of metaphorical framing theory,it can be found that the media emphasize the identity of the new farmers as builders of their hometowns.(3)Different metaphorical surface frames can activate different aspects of agricultural development,the values activated by the metaphorical surface frames can echo with the agricultural aspects,and the new farmers’ identities constructed by the media can be integrated into the interaction of the three.Then,from the five aspects of agriculture and metaphorical lexical markers,we can summarize the identities of new farmers constructed by China central media: the leader of farmers,the gardener of new agricultural development model,the soldier of agricultural science and technology battles,the environmentalist,the helmsman of Rural Revitalization and the excellent hometown builder.From the theoretical perspective,this thesis combines the metaphorical framing theory with the identity construction theory,which can not only enrich the theoretical perspective of identity construction research,but also expand the research scope of the metaphorical framing theory.At the same time,the thesis has far-reaching social significance,which is conducive to the international dissemination of the image of new farmers and makes the public at home and abroad fully understand China.In addition,the positive new farmer identities can attract more people to join the new farmer group and help accelerate poverty alleviation and Rural Revitalization. |
