Intentionality is an important issue in the study of philosophy of mind, and it is also seen as the key to determining whether artificial intelligence possesses intelligence.Searle is the initiator of the problem of intentionality in the field of artificial intelligence. He proposed in his Chinese House argument that intentionality is unique to humans, and computer systems cannot acquire this ability. This has sparked intense discussions among experts and scholars in the field of artificial intelligence regarding intentionality.Due to the limitations of science and technology,as well as human cognition, the problem of intentionality in artificial intelligence has not yet been satisfactorily solved. The first chapter of this article mainly outlines the significance of the topic selection, the current research status at home and abroad,as well as the research content and ideas. The second chapter introduces the rapid development of AI technology under the two paradigms of symbolism and connectionism. The academic community is very optimistic about the future of AI,and proposes the goal of strong AI.Among many critics,Searle pointed out that the goal of strong AI could not be achieved at all,the lack of semantics led to the lack of understanding of AI,and AI that could not obtain human intentionality was never real intelligence. The author divides the existing intentionality problems into two categories, namely whether artificial intelligence can obtain intentionality and what kind of intentionality artificial intelligence can obtain. The third chapter provides a systematic analysis of the intentionality theory of internalism.Searle insists that intentionality is intrinsic, while emphasizing that only the biological brain can obtain this intrinsic intention.Fodor proposed the establishment of the Thought Language Hypothesis to demonstrate the connection between brain cognition and language, but this does not conform to the prior nature of intentionality;Computationalism has attempted semantic representation, but the implementation of semantic representation requires further improvement in scientific and technological level; At present, the most cutting-edge large-scale pre trained language models, although able to achieve zero sample data processing, still cannot obtain semantics, resulting in frequent false results. The fourth chapter discusses the opposition of externalists to the inherent intentionality of artificial intelligence.First of all, pragmatism, represented by Dennett, opposes that intentionality comes from biology itself and advocates that intentionality comes from the endowments of human brain consciousness.Functionalism, represented by Hahnard, does not agree that Searle’s intrinsic intentionality view is based on the computer system. He advocates that the two should be recognized separately, and believes that computer systems can only obtain derived intentionality.Experts have proposed their own solutions for how computing systems can gain understanding and intentionality: Hanad’s robots with external sensory and motor systems,Vigoto et al.’s puzzle games, and Floridian’s zero semantic solutions. However, these theories all exhibit the drawbacks of behaviorism or lack of purpose. In the fifth chapter, the author puts forward his own opinion that AI acquires intentional characteristics, and the derived intentionality may be achieved in three directions: reductionism, teleology, and embodiment. In the end, this paper expounds the positive effects of the research on AI intentionality on cognitive philosophy and natural language processing technology of AI.
