The E-C Translation Of Double-dashes

In this report,the writer chooses to translate a philosophical work,The Geometry of Desert,written by Shelly Kagan,a professor of philosophy at Yale University.In this book,the author discusses many questions about the philosophical concept of “desert”using geometrical methods.As an informative text,the source text contains many academic terms and questions,as well as many parentheses and complex sentences.The most prominent characteristic of the source text is the frequent use of double-dashes.While double-dashes help the author convey information and achieve cohesion between clauses,they also create difficulties in the translation process.As a special form of dash,double-dashes are not commonly used in Chinese texts,and research on the E-C translation of double-dashes is still scarce.Previous studies have suggested that the cohesive function of punctuation is similar to the three logico-semantic relations proposed by Halliday.Therefore,in this report,the writer uses the three logico-semantic relations to classify cases of double-dashes and to further explore the transformation of logico-semantic relations in different semantic contexts,and discusses the methods and strategies for translating double-dashes.In this report,the writer finds that the translation methods for double-dashes include: retaining double-dashes,converting double-dashes into a single dash or other punctuation marks,deleting double-dashes,and,reconstructing the sentence.In general,the core idea in the E-C translation of double-dashes is to restore semantic functions and ensure the fluency and coherence of Chinese expressions.The report is divided into five chapters.At the beginning of the report,the writer provides an overview of the translation practice task and describes the translation process.And then,in the chapter of literature review,the writer briefly introduces the cohesion theory and the cohesive functions of double-dashes.In addition,the chapter also discusses the differences between double-dashes in Chinese and English as well as previous studies on the E-C translation of double-dashes.In the case analysis chapter,the writer classifies and studies the double-dashes in the source text according to different semantic functions under the structure of cohesion theory.The writer then summarizes systematic translation methods and strategies in this part.Finally,in the chapter of conclusion,the writer concludes the report by discussing the major findings and the limitations and gains of this report.
