Huang Daozhou,known for his wide-ranging knowledge of ancient and contemporary learning,was an eminent scholar proficient in astronomy,geography,and literary composition.He was also a renowned calligrapher,widely regarded as a paragon who have a high degree of unity of personal character and literary style,exemplifying the virtues of uprightness,loyalty,and filial piety in his calligraphic works.Huang’s calligraphic style was highly innovative and transformative,and he is considered one of the representative calligraphers of the Romantic calligraphic style of the late Ming Dynasty.His achievements in xiaokai(small regular script)calligraphy were particularly notable,displaying an antique simplicity,a natural elegance,and a unique style named "qijueqiumei"This article is divided into four parts.The first part discusses Huang Daozhou’s life experience and explores his pursuit of "the way of writing" and the manifestation of his calligraphic personality from the perspective of a Confucian scholar,set against the backdrop of the great changes in late Ming Dynasty.The second part analyzes the sources of Huang Daozhou’s xiaokai(small regular script)calligraphic style,which he developed by initially studying the Secretariat style after passing the imperial examination,then seeking change and innovation.Looking back to the Wei and Jin dynasties,the Zhongshu script was widely promoted as a model.Eventually,Huang Daozhou integrated the strengths of various calligraphic styles from the Tang and Song dynasties,forming a unique style and appearance.The third part systematically reviews Huang Daozhou’s extant xiaokai works,analyzing the evolution of his style from the early clear and elegant style to the mature and vigorous style.The article also examines his calligraphic style features from the aspects of the overall appearance,brushwork,and structure,as well as his impact on later generations.The fourth part analyses how the lessons learned from Huang Daozou’s small regular script can be applied to author’s work,taking into account my own learning practice.
