The Application Of Metaphorical Rhetoric In Experimental Animated Short Films

Experimental animation flourished in the 1960 s and 1970 s,laying the foundation for the development of mainstream animation in the world afterwards.From the past to the present,metaphor has been transformed from unconscious to conscious and applie d to experimental animation.The importance of metaphor as a kind of cognitive thinki ng is that it has made an inescapable contribution to aesthetic expression,cultural textu re,artistic value,and thematic content.This thesis firstly identifies the concept of metaphorical rhetoric from the perspective of semiotics and sorts out its development history.By studying the metaphorical expressions in animated images under different cognitive environments,psychological processes and semiotic chains,the mechanism of metaphor generation and understanding process are studied and analyzed;secondly,the evolution process,functional types and operation mechanism of metaphor in cognitive processes are explained around the path of image semiotics-A new interpretation of the rhetorical use and design expressions in image metaphors is presented.We summarize and conclude that there are three main rhetorical forms of metaphor applied to experimental animation research-reference metaphor and metaphor for metaphor,and irony;again,we analyze and argue metaphor and the communication of semantic meaning in experimental animation with examples,explore the aesthetic mechanism of metaphor rhetoric in experimental animation,and study metaphor rhetoric from three aspects: indicative meaning,symbolic meaning,and aesthetic meaning The study and analysis of metaphor rhetoric in experimental animation will provide new ideas for the design language of innovative thinking in experimental animation.Finally,taking the personal experimental animation "Lifetime Food" as an example,we further elaborate the application of metaphorical rhetoric in animation creation and the use of image metaphors in character image,character movement and color symbols,and analyze and argue the unique artistic value of metaphors based on meaning categories,so as to provide animation designers with systematic creative ideas and applications.The analysis also demonstrates the unique artistic value of meaning-based metaphors.Metaphorical rhetoric is rooted in people’s daily life as a way of cognition,interpreting image symbols in an efficient way,and thus art creation goes deeper and deeper.As a purely artistic audiovisual presentation,experimental animation needs to introduce metaphorical rhetoric into experimental animation,construct metaphors from thinking and cognitive level,and create more innovative artistic language to present the unique aesthetic value of experimental animation and promote the dissemination and communication of experimental animation in the society and culture.
