Since the invention of photography in the 19 th century,images have quickly replaced text as an important medium of information exchange with their intuitive presentation and ease of production,and with the support of the modern media system,images have not only simplified life,but also reshaped the way of thinking.Faced with the wave of images,German figurative painting artists after World War Ⅱ chose a different path from the artistic trend of the time,accepting the existence of images while trying to inject the unique spirituality of the German nation into images in order to get rid of the deficiency of superficial and fragmented image culture.Through long-term artistic practice and difficult self-analysis,German figurative painting artists found a new life for painting in the translation of images and revived the marginalized German culture through the translation of images,thus realizing the modernity of German culture and art.The first part of the paper will discuss the history of painting and image and the issues that are still debated in today’s academic environment,and through the introduction of the concept of transliteration in linguistics,the connotation of image transliteration will be drawn.The second part is an analysis of the causes of the phenomenon of image transcreation in German figurative painting after World War Ⅱ,discussing the inevitability of image transcreation in German figurative painting from three levels: the history of technology,the history of culture,and the development of cultural policy and philosophy in Germany after the war.The third part,as the key chapter of the essay,summarizes the intertextuality,transformation,reorganization,variation of images and adjustment of reading difficulty of images in German figurative painting after World War Ⅱ through the analysis of the works of Anselm Kiefer,Sigmar Polke,Georg Baselitz and other most representative artists in post-war Germany,respectively.The fourth section summarizes the ways of transliteration of images due to The fourth section summarizes the artistic and cognitive transformations brought about by the occurrence of image translation in three main directions: technological renewal,conceptual iteration,and reorganization of power.The final conclusion recapitulates the ways in which image translation existed in post-World War Ⅱ German figurative painting,and situates them in the current creative environment to provide insights for painting today.In the study,it is found that the phenomenon of image translation in post-WWⅡ German figurative painting is the result of the development logic of painting art,the German national temperament and the current situation of post-war Germany,and that behind the seemingly absurd image translation is actually a necessity of cultural philosophy and social reality.Although the motives for their creation were different,in general,the German figurative painting artists after World War Ⅱ did not turn away from images and modern civilization;they took images as the entry point to actively intervene in modern discourse,and through difficult methodological exploration realized the revival of German art in the post-war period and made it a new art genre alongside American Abstract Expressionism.The post-World War Ⅱ German art’s thinking about nationality and modernity is worthy of study and reference for today’s Chinese painting.
