Reading and writing are interwoven with each other.Integrated English reading and writing has positive effect on students’ English learning.It can not only develop their comprehensive language ability,but also cultivate their high-level thinking capacity.However,in practice,it is common that teachers emphasize on language and structure analysis but neglect the thematic exploration.Therefore,reading and writing are connected only in surface.As an emerging integrated reading and writing model,KEEP-CRITICAL combines reading and writing from language and theme with “Four Stages” and“Eight Steps”,which is beneficial to cultivating students’ key competencies of English subject.This study applies KEEP-CRITICAL model in senior high school and examines its influence on students’ key competences development.The research questions are as follows:(1)What are the effects of the integrated reading and writing instruction on students’ English reading ability?(2)What are the effects of the integrated reading and writing instruction on students’ English writing performance?(3)What are the effects of the integrated reading and writing instruction on students’ attitudes towards English learning?Research subjects are 86 students in class 7 and class 8 from Tianjin No.25 Senior High School.As control group,class 7 remains the traditional teaching method,while as experiment group,class 8 applies KEEP-CRITICAL model.Pre-test,post-test,questionnaire and interview are research instruments in this study.After two months’ experiment,conclusions and findings are drawn.Firstly,KEEP-CRITICAL model can improve students’ English reading ability,which is reflected in students’ increased use of reading strategies,better reading comprehension level and deeper opinion evaluation.Besides,it can enhance students’ English writing performance,which is manifested in well-planning,accurate formulation and high-quality revision.In addition,it can help students build positive learning attitudes,such as sense of achievement and self-confidence.
