Vocabulary acquisition plays an important role in the process of language learning.English vocabulary learning is the basis of students’ English learning,which is related to students’ English knowledge learning and the improvement of English level.With the continuous reform of education and curriculum and the proposed new curriculum standards,the teaching and learning of vocabulary are more and more emphasized on the combination of specific topics and in a specific context.So how teachers conduct vocabulary teaching with the thematic context has become an important issue at present.In order to further understand the teaching situation of vocabulary teaching based on thematic-context in various stages of vocabulary presentation,practice and production,this study adopts the classroom observation method and takes the 11 th High School English Exemplary Lessons Competition as the observation object,aiming to explore the teaching situation of high school English vocabulary based on thematic context and provide some suggestions for future vocabulary teaching.Based on this,three research questions are designed in this study: 1.How was vocabulary teaching done in the presentation step of high school English Exemplary Lessons from the perspective of thematic context? 2.How was vocabulary teaching done in the practice step of high school English Exemplary Lessons from the perspective of thematic context? 3.How was vocabulary teaching done in the production step of high school English Exemplary Lessons from the perspective of thematic context?It is found that most teachers can use thematic context in vocabulary teaching.In the presentation step,teachers use the creation of situations and oral communication activities to conduct vocabulary teaching;In the practice step,few teachers use context to practice vocabulary in the practice step;In the production step,teachers mainly create the context related to the topic for students to use the target vocabulary in the production step,so that students can understand the literal and metaphorical meaning of the words and phrases in the context and can actively think and use the target vocabulary to creatively express their own opinions.Based on the findings of these research questions,the author conducted an in-depth discussion on the use of context in vocabulary teaching in exemplary English lessons,and proposed suggestions for front-line teachers to use context in vocabulary teaching to improve current English vocabulary teaching in high schools: 1.Teachers should have clear vocabulary teaching objectives,focusing on the target words related to the topic context;In addition,the creation of context should be combined with other methods,such as the use of pictures,paraphrasing,word formation,etc.2.Teachers should ensure the authenticity of the context they create.The context should conform to the students’ actual life,and teachers should pay more attention to the use of various contexts for vocabulary teaching.3.Teachers should create as many opportunities as possible for students to practice and use target vocabulary;In addition to direct practice activities,teachers should also use some indirect ways to consolidate students’ memory of target vocabulary,such as the teacher’s teaching language and the repeated presentation and use of target vocabulary in PPT.In a word,the author hopes to provide a reliable theoretical basis for first-line English teachers to apply context to vocabulary teaching,and to improve teachers’ vocabulary teaching level as well as students’ vocabulary application ability.
