Discourse Markers In Diplomatic Context

The use of discourse markers is a well-explored topic and it is also an important part in the field of communication.However,most people ignore the importance of discourse markers,because they believe that discourse markers are optional and have no effects on the sentence structure or semantic expression.In fact,discourse markers play an important role in helping people to understand the text and make sentences more coherent.Diplomatic interpretation mostly happens in important and serious international events such as,international conferences,international negotiations and international press conference.When the audience are not Chinese,in this case,the appropriate use of discourse markers can help listeners better understand the message conveyed by the speaker.This article is based on relevance theory,and take the 2020-2022 Foreign Ministry press conference as research data.The study reveals that discourse markers have the functions of discourse organization,contextual compliance,interpersonal and interactive functions.The proper use of discourse markers enable listeners to understand the speaker with minimal effort.This meet the requirement of optimal relevance in Relevance Theory.Through this article,the author hope to provide more reference for the use of discourse markers in future practice.
