Madama Butterfly is one of Giacomo Puccini’s three best operas in three acts.The authenticity of the subject matter and the vividness of the music portray the character and the inner nature of the opera’s characters,and the musical tone of the music makes each character in the opera deeply felt and a classic.The author has chosen Madame Butterfly(Cio-Cio-San)from among the many classics,and the characterisation of Cio-Cio-San,as well as the analysis of her four arias,has been carefully thought out and analysed.Her characterisation and musicality are analysed and studied,and the endless charm of the character is experienced from a variety of perspectives,including music,plot and the changes in character at different stages.This article focuses on four aspects of the opera Madama Butterfly: the history of its creation,Puccini’s tragic portrayal of Cochineal,the perfect combination of Cochineal’s dramatic image and music,and the reflections provoked by the value of singing the four arias.This paper focuses on the characterisation and singing of Madame Butterfly in the opera Cio-Cio-San.In order to gain a deeper understanding of the opera and to conduct a comprehensive investigation of the four arias of its heroine,the paper is presented in three parts: the introduction,the body and the conclusion,which summarise the current state of research,the significance of this study and its innovations and values,and provide a basis for the writing of the paper.In the first part of the paper,the three stages of the evolution of Madame Butterfly’s form,how the opera succeeds in the face of adversity,the development of the plot and the artistic value of the opera’s creation are explained.In the third part,in order to understand the musical image of Madame Butterfly in more detail,we focus on the emotion of the singing,the handling of the singing,and the emotions that the audience can feel,and we select four arias that represent her character in different periods: “Lo seguo il mio destino I follow my destiny”,“Un bel di,vedremo”,“La triste mia canzon” and The last part is a reflection on the value of the four arias sung by the heroine of Madama Butterfly.The first is an analysis of the characterisation of “Cio-Cio-San” in combination with the musical image of the character,so as to see the role of characterisation in the singing;the second is an analysis of the music of these four arias,combined with the author’s experience in the process of learning vocal music,so as to summarise their value in the teaching of vocal music.This article explores the character traits of Cio-Cio-San at different times and her four arias,as well as the development of the storyline,and combines its own analysis and learning process to provide a reference for learners who do not know this opera,so that listeners can have a clearer and more intuitive feeling of the emotions expressed in the music by the characters in this opera,and also to provide an opportunity for their own learning and teaching in the future It will also provide an opportunity for me to improve my theoretical knowledge and singing skills.
