| Cultural translation has become an important trend since the 1970 s,which has broken the shackles of linguistics. The concept of “cultural filtering” proposed by Julian House has made a further development to cultural translation. However, only a small number of academics have made a detailed study of this concept in the field of translation later, most of which have been confined to conceptual interpretation. In the field of CrossCultural Theatre, the Hourglass Model proposed by Patrice Pavis has made progress on House’s theoretical idea of “cultural filtering”,which has shed light on the exploration of the mechanism of cultural filtering. The cultural filtering model in translation studies proposed in this thesis is an adaptive development and specific interpretation of the Hourglass Model. This model,on the basis of critical inheritance of Patrice Pavis’ Hourglass Model, clarifies the operating mechanism and internal relationship among the four major cultural filters(Language Filter,Translator and Patronage’s Filter,Filter of Reader’s Reception, and Ideology Filter),forming an integral cultural filtering chain in translation, which aims at bridging the gap and resolving the conflicts between the source culture and the target culture in a more systematic way,so as to help the translated text secure acceptance and recognition from the target culture. Its feasibility in translation practice will also be examined by examples from both Chinese to English and English to Chinese translations in this thesis. |
