| The source text of this translation practice is selected from the novel Memories of Jiang Nan by Wang Xufeng, the winner of the Mao Dun Literature Award. The novel was first published by Zhejiang Literature and Art Publishing House in January2022.And it tells how the tea businessmen in Hangzhou City spent the turbulent times in the two decades before and after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The novel takes the Hang family members as main characters.By describing the rise and fall of the Hang family and the different life paths of the members of the family,it highlights the kindness and tenacity of the Hang family, and then shows the spirit and quality of the whole Chinese nation. Therefore, the translator selected the third and fourth chapters of the novel, with a total of 21,409 Chinese characters,to carry out translation practice and writes this practice report.Through the analysis of the source text, the translator chose Peter Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory as the theoretical guidance.Communicative translation theory emphasizes that the target language readers should have the same feelings as the source language readers when reading the original text, that is,the text has the same effect on the readers. On lexical level, for the translation of personal names and place names, the translator first followed the principle of "Adaptation to Original Names".If there was no official translated name, the translator would imitate the translation of similar translated names,so as to ensure the loyalty to the original text to the greatest extent. For the translation of dialect and four-character case, the translator adopted literal translation, free translation and omission methods through specific context to improve the readability of the translation. On syntactic level, the translator mainly analyzed the translation of non-subject sentences and Chinese run-on sentences. For non-subject sentence, the translator made the sentence more consistent with the language expression habits of the target language by adding the subject or shifting voice.Translating Chinese run-on sentences required the translator to reconstruct the sentences according to the logical relationship of the sentences in order to be readable. On textual level, translators enhanced the cohesive relations within sentences through grammatical means and enhance the coherence between sentences by adding connectives. To sum up,the translator believed that when translating literary works into English, the translator should pay attention to the target readers under the guidance of Communicative Translation Theory, and flexibly use various translation techniques in combination with translation purposes to improve the acceptability and readability of the translation. This translation practice applied Communicative Translation Theory to the study of English translation of literary translation, which had certain positive significance for helping Chinese novels "go out". |
