Schubert’s Impromptu in B-flat major was composed in 1827,the year before Schubert’s death and at the most mature stage of his compositional technique. The work uses the variation form, and the five variations show five emotions-warmth,joyful,sadness,vitality and soaring. The article will discuss and explore the work in depth and comprehensively from four perspectives: composition background, composition structure, composition characteristics and performance analysis. The author takes the composer’s background and the origin of the composition as a guide, and takes the analysis of the B-flat major improvisation as an entry point to analyze the romantic, singing and narrative aspects of the composition. Finally,we will summarize the key points and difficulties in the performance with our own performance experience,in order to understand more deeply the composer’s musical style and his strong character traits, and to explore the shaping and development of musical motives,so as to further explain the characteristics of piano music of the early Romantic period embodied in the composition of Schubert’s Improvisation in B-flat major.
