Chinese Mail was founded in 1872,stopped publication in 1941,and began to publish novels in 1904.By the end of 1940,there have been 37 years of novel publication history,with a total of 321 novels(departments).It has been published for a long time,a large number of publications and high quality,which has important research value,but it has been ignored by the literary research institute.This thesis takes the novels and novel criticism published in Chinese Mail Daily in modern times(1904-1919)as the research object,and compares the works after 1919.In order to more comprehensively show the publication process and value significance of novels and novel criticism in Chinese Mail.In addition to the introduction and appendix,the text is divided into five parts:The first chapter analyzes the reasons for the publication of novels in Hong Kong Huazi Daily,which conforms to the development trend of Lingnan newspapers and novels,conforms to the law of the development of newspapers and periodicals,and accords with the changing trend of novel history.Combined with the changes of publication time,quantity and content,this paper combs the course of novel publication in Hong Kong Huazi Daily: the first stage is from 1872 to 1903,there are no literary works published in 32 years,mainly to publish business information and news editorials.and try to publish novel advertisements to pave the way for the publication of later novels.The second stage,from 1904 to 1919,complied with the development of the times,first published translated novels,then published self-written novels,the content of the novels was relatively traditional and conformed to the conservative style of the newspaper;in the third stage,from 1920 to 1940,a large number of novels were published and self-written novels developed vigorously,but they still mainly published traditional novels,which obviously lagged behind the development of the times.The second chapter takes time as the clue and the content of the works as the basis to sort out the group characteristics of novelists in Hong Kong Huazi Daily.Before 1911,there were mainly translation novelists,supplemented by social and emotional novelists.after 1911,it showed the continuation of the old-style novelists and the late emergence of the new-style novelists.The third chapter mainly examines the characteristics of translated novels in Chinese Mail,combining the subject matter,content,artistic skills and translation context.It is characterized by the innovation of translation themes,the localization of translation strategies,the novelty of translation techniques and the westernization of translation content.the publication of its translated novels conforms to the development trend of translated novels in Lingnan,conforms to the self-interests of newspapers and periodicals,and embodies the regional advantages of Hong Kong.It also shows the strategy of publishing modern newspapers and novels.The fourth chapter mainly examines the characteristics of the self-written novel in Chinese Mail,which shows the characteristics of the times in the subject matter,narrative and language,and the regional characteristics in the content and style of the novel.At the same time,compared with other newspapers and novels in Hong Kong,it can be seen that the lag in the development of self-written novels in Chinese Mail mainly publishes old-style novels on the whole,and the publication of new-style novels not only lags behind the times.It also lags behind the development trend of new-style novels in Hong Kong.The fifth chapter first analyzes the characteristics of novel critics to novel criticism,and then expounds the characteristics of novel criticism in Chinese Mail.Novel critics are divided into two categories,one is traditional novel critics,the other is new novel critics.The form of novel criticism shows the transition from traditional to modern,that is,from scattered criticism and poetry criticism to monographs.The content of novel criticism is also divided into two categories.New novel criticism has an obvious critical position of promoting the West and restraining China;attach importance to the role of novels in enlightening society;summarize the methods of new novels;promote new novels;and attach importance to giving full play to the function of novel criticism.Traditional novel criticism,on the one hand,continues the perspective of ancient novel criticism,mainly based on historical criticism,skill criticism,self-narrative criticism and grammar criticism,but focuses on tapping the excellent core of traditional novels.On the other hand,criticizing ancient novels from the perspective of modern culture focuses on showing the progress of ancient novels.The sixth chapter makes an overall evaluation of the value of Chinese Mail.First,it has literature value.The literature of Chinese Mail is the first.Rich novels and novel criticism supplement the study of Lingnan newspapers and novels and change the impression that there is no novel criticism in Lingnan.Second,it has literary value.Chinese Mail,as an important newspaper in Hong Kong,has further strengthened the study of the history of novels in Hong Kong.In addition,the complicated types of novels in Chinese Mail also show the mixed and vague historical features of modern "novel" concepts.Third,it has cultural value.The experience of the novel published in Chinese Mail reflects not only the impact of colonial rule on Hong Kong society,but also the identity of Hong Kong people to the culture of the Chinese nation under the colonial background.Fourth,through the study of the novel and novel criticism of Chinese Mail,it is found that the value of the newspaper in literature,literature and culture has further improved the status of Chinese Mail in the study of newspaper history.After 70 years of ups and downs,Chinese Mail is a microcosm of an era and a microcosm of a region.The study of novel and novel criticism in Hong Kong Huazi Daily shows not only the characteristics of the newspaper’s literary works,but also the difficult exploration of newspapers in modern literature,which is not only the development of literary history,but also the embodiment of cultural history.
