A Research On EFL Teachers’ Curriculum Leadership In Senior High Schools

Abstract/Summary:
In 2022,China’s Ministry of Education and seven other authorities have issued A plan to build a stronger teacher force for the country’s basic education system,proposing that the country should create a professional and innovative teacher team with high quality in the new era,in order to provide a stronger teacher guarantee for accelerating the modernization of basic education.Teachers’ curriculum leadership is an important factor affecting curriculum construction in school and the development of students’ core competence of English subject.It is also a key indicator for measuring high-quality professional teacher teams.Teachers should transform from past curriculum executors into curriculum leaders.Based on the theory of distributed leadership and curriculum leadership,this study adopts qualitative research methods to explore EFL teachers’ curriculum leadership in senior high schools,aiming to provide inspiration for the professional development of EFL teachers in senior high schools.The specific research questions of this study include:(1)What characteristics do EFL teachers in senior high schools have in curriculum leadership?(2)What are the factors influencing EFL teachers’ curriculum leadership in senior high schools? Based on purposive sampling,maximizing variation and voluntary participation,four EFL teachers in senior high schools were selected as research participants.Taking semi-structured interviews as a qualitative research tool,transcription,keyword extraction,and coding analysis were conducted on data collection from the two rounds of interview and case material.This study has the following findings:(1)EFL teachers in senior high schools present four characteristics of curriculum leadership.In terms of the understanding of curriculum value,novice teachers pay more attention to the subject value,while experienced teachers pay more attention to the educational value.In terms of the development of curriculum resources,teachers are aware that textbooks are limited resources and other curriculum resources need to be developed,including school-based textbooks and curriculum activities.Teachers basically refer to high-quality teaching resources,capture inspiration in life,or learn from each other by attending teaching seminars.In terms of the reflection of curriculum evaluation,the subject of curriculum evaluation is relatively single,mainly teachers and students,rarely leaders.The curriculum evaluation mainly focuses on the summative evaluation and ignores formative evaluation.(2)EFL teachers’ curriculum leadership is mainly influenced by individual factors and organizational factors.Teachers’ individual factors have a greater impact,mainly reflected in EFL teachers’ personal traits,personal experience and personal awareness of self-development.Teachers with a strong awareness of self-development often possess strong curriculum leadership.Organizational factors include the concept of school development and school leaders’ concept of curriculum leadership.The effects of these influencing factors are not the same.Based on research data,the frequency of their occurrence ranges from the personal awareness of self-development to the outermost concept of school development.The closer to the core,the greater influence on teachers’ curriculum leadership.Based on this,this study constructs an onion model of the influencing factors on curriculum leadership development.In order to improve EFL teachers’ curriculum leadership in senior high schools,some suggestions are put forward for EFL teachers and schools.(1)For EFL teachers,they should establish correct awareness of curriculum leadership.Specifically,it includes the awareness of curriculum subjects,curriculum objectives,curriculum resources,curriculum implementation,and curriculum evaluation.At the same time,EFL teachers should also enrich the theoretical knowledge of the curriculum and strengthen the practice of curriculum leadership.(2)For schools,on one hand they should give teachers real curriculum leadership to participate in curriculum planning and curriculum development.On the other hand,schools should also actively build a curriculum leadership community so that EFL teachers can improve their curriculum leadership together with the help of collective strength and wisdom.An open,democratic,and cooperative teacher curriculum leadership community is conducive to enhancing teachers’ curriculum leadership.
