Exploration Of The Artistic Characteristics Of Yang Weizhen’s Cursive Script

Yang Weizhen was a representative of the reclusive calligraphers in the late Yuan Dynasty.His cursive writing showed an image of "rough-headed and messy clothes" image,and his cursive script has always been praised and criticized.The research on his artistic characteristics of cursive calligraphy can better guide us to look at the classic works in calligraphy and how to learn the classics.Yang Weizhen kept evolving on the basis of the "retro" trend of thought.His creative concept of emphasizing "temperament" gave the character of "the impossible law,law from lawlessness".He also used regular script,running script,seal script,Zhangcao script and other fonts in writing to form the "broken style",and made great use of odd characters,seal script and ancient Chinese as well.This creative method of seeking novelty and emphasizing the individualized expression of calligraphers still has its reference significance which cannot be ignored from the view of modern people.Yang Weizhen’s breakthrough in clay-ancient calligraphy of the Yuan Dynasty lies not only in his superhuman talent of combining ancient and modern calligraphy,but also in his ability to find his true self and not be bound by the ancients,but also in his ability to integrate his own temperament and show his own personalized style in addition to the ancients’ rules and regulations.This is what contemporary calligraphers lack in the process of their creation.Therefore,in addition to the study of the characteristics of Yang Weizhen’s cursive calligraphy art,we should also pay attention to the analysis of the background,origin,performance and historical value of his cursive calligraphy creation.This paper mainly probes into the artistic characteristics of Yang Weizhen’s cursive calligraphy,and analyzes it in combination with his own creation.The content of this paper is mainly carried out in the following three parts.The first chapter mainly expounds the creation background,origin and performance of Yang Weizhen’s cursive calligraphy in three aspects,and explores the general situation of his cursive calligraphy.The second chapter mainly analyzes the artistic characteristics of Yang Weizhen’s cursive calligraphy in detail,combining with the specific works of his cursive script to analyze from three aspects: peculiar appearance,arbitrary brushwork and integration of Zhang Cao.The third chapter mainly discusses the inspiration to the author’s calligraphy creation based on Yang Weizhen’s art of calligraphy as the cornerstone,which mainly includes three aspects:the creation attempt of the integration of calligraphy and Zhangcao,the reflection on the inundation of calligraphy and the pursuit of the naturalization of non-utility writing.Finally,the author realized the importance of self-consciousness in calligraphy creation.Under the background of the diversified development of contemporary exhibition hall culture,we should not only follow the traditional technology and techniques,but also develop the self-style with the spirit of the times.
