| Arthur Waley is the first person translating Dunhuang ballads into English version.He has translated 26 popular stories from Dunhuang Bianwen Chi and compiled them into the anthology of Ballads and Stories from Tun-Huang(1960).This is an irreplaceable achievement that makes great contributions to the readers of the English world who are interested in and try to understand Dunhuang ballads as well as Chinese popular literature.However,domestic scholars hardly pay attention to Ballads and Stories from Tun-Huang that was translated in his later years,and no one uses variational translation theory to analyze his English version.Thus,this dissertation tries to take the English version of Ballads and Stories from Tun-Huang as the research object,and use variational translation methods of Huang Zhonglian’s variational translation theory to select some representative examples and make a descriptive and interpretative study of Waley’s translation.The research results show that seven variational methods such as selected translation,edited translation and altered translation are applicable for the interpretation and analysis of the text style changes of Ballads and Stories from Tun-Huang.This dissertation is not only a supplementary to Waley’s translation studies,but also provides a new theoretical perspective for domestic researchers and translators,and it has certain reference significance for foreign translation and dissemination of Chinese cultural classics. |
