A Study On The Lyricism And Intelligence Of Zhang Zhihao’s Poetry

Chinese brilliant traditional poetry has constructed a powerful lyric tradition.This tradition continues to this day.Yet,more than 100-year-old modern poetry has been forming its own little tradition as well.This little tradition continues the lyricism of the great tradition on the one hand.On the other hand,it has been modified.Among them,the most obvious difference between great and little tradition is that from the beginning of modern poetry,especially since the 1930 s,there has been a tendency of intellectual writing,which is not quite distinct in traditional poetry.Therefore,this means that every contemporary Chinese poet has virtually to deal with both the great and little tradition of poetry.If tradition brings competitive anxiety to every latecomer in poetry writing,then poets today are,in fact,such poor writers of double anxiety.How on Earth should a contemporary Chinese poetry writer confront the big and small traditions and deal with the relationship between emotional expression and intellectual thinking? Zhang Zhihao’s poetry writing may provide us with some special experience.Featuring strikingly lyricism,Zhang Zhihao’s poems seem unavant-garde.From the point of view of reader’s acceptance,Zhang Zhihao’s poems are more “readable”,and more empathetic than the works of many contemporary poets.This certainly credits to Zhang Zhihao’s writing skills.However,it is largely a result of his recognition of the lyrical tradition in depth.If from the angle of writing theme,the lyricism of Zhang Zhihao’s poetry mainly concentrates in the writing of family affection,the childhood countryside life scene as well as daily life in the city.Zhang Zhihao himself,as a poet who grew up in the countryside and then lived in the city,was familiar with these themes.In the transformation of contemporary society,these themes sensitively touched reader’s nerves,on account of a large proportion of the readers of the poems sharing with him a very similar life and emotional experience after all.Absolutely,Zhang Zhihao is not the only contemporary poet who values this lyric tradition.It can even be deemed that most poets are featured on lyricism consciously or unconsciously.What makes Zhang Zhihao outstanding is that his poetry lyricism are not exactly the same as traditional lyrics,or that his poetry is not so “readable” or “easy to understand” from another point of view(reader’s acceptance).It is hard to understand Zhang Zhihao’s poems,by reason that there actually has the quite profound intellectuality writing characteristic behind his lyricism.In other words,he did not stay on the surface of lyricism.This kind of intellectual characteristic is shown not only in the intake of some scientific elements,but also in the rational thinking of real life,and further in his strong questioning spirit to the world and the reality.However,lyricism and intellect have always been a pair of contradictions.How to reconcile and even merge the two is an eternal problem for the writer of any times.Does Zhang Zhihao achieve and how to achieve this reconcilement and integration? It is necessary to go back to the text of his poems and read them carefully.It is found that Zhang Zhihao in deed constitutes his own voice in terms of words,images,rhetoric,internal structure,etc.,which provides a valuable reference for contemporary Chinese poetry writers on how to deal with the relationship between emotional expression and intellectual thinking.
