A Report On The Translation Of Biographical Materials For University Publicity From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

In recent years,Chinese higher education has witnessed an increasingly frequent and in-depth international exchange and cooperation.The development of higher education is closely related to international publicity which serves as a significant channel for Chinese universities to present their images,helping the world know more about their teaching and research.As the first modern university in China,Tianjin University has always attached importance to the role played by international publicity in establishing its positive image and improving its international reputation.During the 125 th anniversary of Tianjin University,the Publicity Department of Tianjin University launched the compilation of a series of books specifically designed for the publicity campaign,in which the author served as a translator.As requested by the Publicity Department,the author needed to consider the acceptability of the source text to the target audience and make corresponding adjustments so as to achieve its intended function.Thus,Skopos Theory is suitable and instructive for this practice.As the core theory of the German functionalist school,Skopos Theory holds that it is the aim or the purpose that determines the action and process of translation.This theory is mainly composed of the overriding Skopos rule,followed by the supplementary general rules of coherence and fidelity.Under the guidance of the three rules,the author chooses appropriate translation strategies and methods following the need of communicative purpose,hoping that the translated version better conforms to the way readers think and understand,thus facilitating the publicity work.The report,based on the materials with biographical characteristics,consists of four parts,including task description,process description,case analysis,and practice summary.From the perspective of Skopos Theory,this paper analyzes the translation strategies and methods adopted according to the purpose of translation from lexical and syntactic dimensions.It aims to explore the feasibility of Skopos Theory and summarize the suitable translation strategies and methods for the text.This report may also provide some inspiration for the future translation of the same type.
