A Report On The Translation Of Tianjin University’s Eighteen Extraordinary Scholars(Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Function Plus Loyalty

In recent years,exchanges in culture and education between countries are increasing.In the process,in order to raise the fame,higher education schools tend to resort to publicity materials to demonstrate their advantages and development history,which can help foreign students and scholars increase the understanding for the school and enhance its international influence and charm.In this way,publicity books become one of the windows for them to meet the world and play an important role in promoting international exchanges and cooperation in culture and education.This translation practice report is done according to the authors’ translation of 2chapters in Tianjin University’s Eighteen Extraordinary Scholars.From May 2020 to December 2020,the author has been entrusted by the Publicity Department of Tianjin University to be responsible for the translation and proofreading of 2 chapters in this book.The book mainly introduces the deeds of eighteen good teachers and the author is responsible for the stories of Pan Zhengtao and Shu Yangqi.The number of words translated is 10,964.The purpose of this paper is to use Nord’s Function plus Loyalty to guide and analyze the translation of the 2 chapters and combine the learning of translation theories and translation activities,which can do promote the application of theories.The report is divided into four parts.The first part is the description of the translation task.The author mainly describes the background and requirements of the translation,and summarizes the text types,characteristics and problems that should be paid attention to through the analysis of the original text.The second part is a description of the task process,including pre-translation preparation and professional knowledge preparation,translation process and translation proofreading.The third part is a case study of translation analysis.The author describes the literature review and theoretical framework,gives examples to analyze the translation on the basis of function plus loyalty theory and explains the translation strategies and methods used in the practice from the level of vocabulary,sentences and discourses,such as: amplification,free translation,omission,restructuring,conversion of voices,etc.The fourth part is the summary,which mainly concludes the experience gained in the translation practice and the shortcomings in the translation process.
