Reading is one of the necessary language skill for second language learners.The Chinese reading course has two goals: to develop language knowledge and to learn reading methods and skills.Primary Chinese learners are often affected by new words in the process of reading,which made it difficult to read fluently.Improving students’ word guessing ability can help students improve their reading ability and cultivate good reading habits.Starting from the problems arising from teaching practice and combining with the theory of reading skills,this study taking language students as the research objects,explores the characteristics of word guessing of Chinese learners in the primary stage and the role of word guessing teaching in improving their reading ability.The study investigated students’ learning condition and mastery of word guessing skills through questionnaires and reading tests,then wrote teaching design and carried out teaching practice for word guessing skills in five stages.The post-test was based on reading test to investigate the improvement of learners’ reading ability,and to investigate students’ subjective cognition of the process of teaching and learning through interviews.The conclusions of this study are as follows:(1)Learning word guessing skills can appropriately improve the reading ability of primary Chinese learners;(2)Students have a good grasp of word guessing through compound morphemes and word guessing through context;(3)In the future,teacher should deepen the teaching of word guessing skills and cultivate students’ word guessing consciousness step by step.At last,this study reflects on teaching duration,discourse selection,analysis of students and the design of reading test and puts forward suggestions from the perspectives of teachers’ cognition of reading skills teaching,the choice of teaching content and the diversification of teaching methods.
