| Grammar teaching is an indispensable part of foreign language teaching in basic education. As an important means of grammar teaching, explicit instruction and implicit instruction have long been the research focus for foreign scholars. In recent years, domestic scholars have also conducted relevant research into explicit instruction and implicit instruction in English grammar teaching. However, there are not many studies on English grammar teaching in terms of explicit and implicit instruction in junior high schools. This study focuses on the use of explicit and implicit grammar teaching methods in junior high school English classroom, and intends to discuss the following three questions:(1)What is the current situation of explicit instruction and implicit instruction in junior high school English grammar teaching?(2)How do junior high school English teachers perceive explicit instruction and implicit instruction in grammar teaching?(3)What are students’ attitudes towards explicit instruction and implicit instruction?Based on the theories of Acquisition-Learning Hypothesis and Noticing Hypothesis, this study carried out a one-semester-long study in a junior high school in Hangzhou City,Zhejiang Province. The classroom teaching of six teachers was observed and recorded, and their use of explicit instruction and implicit instruction in classroom grammar teaching was analyzed. Then those teachers were interviewed to find their perceptions of the use of explicit instruction and implicit instruction in classroom teaching. Also, questionnaires were distributed to students to investigate their attitudes towards their teachers’ grammar teaching, and SPSS was used for data analysis. The following conclusions have been drawn after the detailed analysis of the data obtained from classroom observation, interview and questionnaire.First of all, explicit instruction and implicit instruction are often used in junior high school English grammar teaching. The explicit method is more frequently employed in grammar teaching, and the implicit method is also used to a certain extent. In rare cases, the integrated method is employed by teachers in grammar teaching. The grammar translation method and drilling are typical explicit method, while communicative language teaching(CLT),task-based language teaching(TBLT)and indirect method are implicit ways of teaching grammar.Secondly, the teachers do not have a good knowledge of the concept and theory of explicit and implicit instruction in their grammar teaching practice. Finally, students attach great importance to grammar learning, and prefer implicit methods like CLT method and TBLT.The results of the research have implications for junior high school English teachers on how to use explicit and implicit teaching methods to teach grammar effectively. |
