Many exquisite artifacts have been unearthed from the tombs of Chu in Hunan,Hubei,Sichuan,Henan and other places.Among these artifacts,tiger themes appear in large numbers.This kind of tiger is regarded as the spiritual bearer of Chu people.Its origin,decorative form,function and so on are worthy of our study,and its implication and cause also need us to explore.At present,most of the studies on tiger decorations in Chu artifacts are understood and interpreted from the perspective of archaeology,while there are still many deficiencies in the studies from the perspective of design.Therefore,the author tries to study the tiger theme decoration in Chu artifacts from the perspective of design,which has positive significance for the systematic study of Chu’s aesthetic characteristics,artistic characteristics and cultural background.From the surface,tiger theme decoration is complicated,but behind it is permeated with various information of social life of Chu people,reflecting the unique aesthetic cognition of Chu culture.This paper takes the tiger theme in Chu artifacts as the research object,defines the temporal and spatial scope of Chu artifacts by consulting various literature materials,summarizes and organizes the Chu artifacts with tiger theme decoration according to their functions and materials,analyzes the decorative forms,decorative characteristics and visual effects of tiger theme in each type of artifacts,and explores the decorative rules of tiger theme in Chu artifacts.Based on archaeological objects,pictures and text narration,this paper summarizes the cultural connotation of tiger theme in Chu artifacts,and explores the causes of tiger theme according to the historical background of Chu development.The Chu utensils were classified according to their functions,and tiger decorations appeared in food utensils,wine utensils,Musical Instruments and weapons.The Chu artifacts are classified according to their materials,and tiger decorations are mostly found in bronze,lacquer and jade.There are various forms of tiger themes in Chu artifacts.Due to different functions and materials,tiger themes have different forms of expression.Chu tiger theme decoration is created in the way of combining concrete and abstract,which not only has the symmetry of its decoration itself,but also has the symmetry of its decoration position.The decorative colors of tiger theme are mainly warm colors,supplemented by similar colors,and embellished with a small amount of cool colors.From the perspective of historical development,the early tiger theme has a single shape,mostly positive tiger head image and side static tiger image.With the development of production technology,the later tiger theme has a more dynamic sense and tends to be realistic.The theme of Chu tiger is mostly expressed as a wish for strength,bravery,shelter,etc.When it is combined with other themes,the theme of tiger changes because of the implied meaning of the combined theme.The formation of the tiger theme decoration in Chu artifacts is not accomplished in one move.The geographical environment factors of Chu laid the foundation for the appearance of the tiger theme,the South China tiger provided the objective image for the Chu tiger theme decoration,the cultural tradition and political factors of Chu people paved the way for the formation of the tiger theme,and the development of handicraft industry and the progress of science and technology promoted the formation of the tiger theme.Chu’s environment and resources,cultural traditions,politics,technology and other factors contributed to the formation of the tiger theme.
