| As a crucial component of academic research and writing, the abstract is an important window for presenting the main information of academic discourses.Reasonable and well-placed use of stance markers in abstracts helps to create a professional and educated image in the minds of readers and to increase the recognition of the paper.Few studies pay attention to the specific discipline of Education, and studies on stance markers in abstracts are limited. The purpose of this thesis is to enlighten Chinese learners of English represented by university students to improve their ability to construct authorial identity and express academic stance internationally.Based on the situation,a corpus-based comparative study is conducted on stance markers used in abstracts of Chinese educational academic journals and abstracts of English educational academic journals with the help of the stance model proposed by Hyland(2005).A total number of 600 article abstracts are selected from 10 high-impact factor journals at home and abroad, based on which two corpora are established. The concordances of hedges, boosters, attitude markers, and self-mentions in the two corpora are calculated with the assistant of Ant Conc(noisy data are removed manually). This study is intended to answer the following three research questions:1.What is the overall feature of stance markers in abstracts of Chinese and English educational academic journals? How are they(hedges, boosters, attitude markers, selfmentions)distributed in the two corpora?2.How do authors of Chinese educational academic journals and authors of English educational academic journals construct authorial identities in their articles with the assistance of stance markers?3.Are there significant differences or similarities in the use of stance markers in the two corpora? The results show that:(1)Hedges,boosters,attitude markers, and self-mentions are all adopted in abstracts in the two corpora, and in terms of the frequency of stance markers, hedges appeared most frequently. The overall frequency of stance markers in international journal abstracts is higher than that in Chinese journal abstracts.(2)The stance markers used in abstracts mainly help authors construct four kinds of authorial identities, namely, representor, interlocutor, evaluator and organizer.Among all the stance markers,self-mention markers are more frequently used in English educational academic journals than the Chinese journals, which shows a higher level of flexibility.(3)Significant differences exist between Chinese and English educational academic journals in terms of stance markers used in abstracts,so do similarities.Compared to English educational academic journals,Chinese educational academic journals use stance markers less frequently.Frequencies of hedges, attitude markers, and selfmentions vary significantly between the two corpora. The overall frequency ranking also differs.Authors of English educational academic journals are more likely to use self-mentions to emphasize their presence in abstracts. As to similarities, stance markers are both widely identified in the two corpora, and hedges are the most frequently used stance markers.Similarities are also shown in certain words. |
