| Before the Caucasus was annexed by the Russia Empire,Russia adopt relatively modest measures to conduct its policy.In the 18 th century,Russia Empire’s policy in the Caucasus was mainly focused on maintaining the military and political alliances,and complemented by cross-border trade,the Caucasus defense line and moderate cultural activities.For the subservient Caucasian ethnic regimes and local elites,Russia did not interfere too much on their original power structures,religious administration systems and economic production modes.Russia had carried out various kinds of measures to advance imperial military and political goals in the newly conquered Caucasus region,these policies had survived to the first half of the19 th century.In the middle of the 19 th century,after the Caucasus had been fully integrated into the Empire,the Russification of Russia was accelerated.The goals of Russification were gradually expanded and the means of Russification were increasingly intensified.The Caucasus was heavily involved in the administrative,economic and cultural structure of the Empire.The diversity of the means of Russian politics and the variability of its mesures of rule were all aimed at achieving the goal of imperial integration with the Caucasus.The Russian policy of Caucasian was in accord with the centralised,secular and standardised guideline of the Empire.These policies also deeply influenced the Caucasus region’s governance pattern,administrative boundary,economic development and class structure. |
