This translation practice report extracts the first part and the first chapter of the second part in Fire and Flood: A People’s History of Climate Change from 1979 to the Present, written by the American writer Eugene Linden,as the source text. The book is an informative text, mainly describes the facts and people’s point of view about climate change. In the structure, each part is connected with a time reference, and the language is logical and contains different forms, which requires a high degree of flexibility and authenticity.Based on the features of the source text, the translator chooses Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory as the guide to carry out translation practice. The report consists of five chapters. The first chapter is introduction, including the introduction of the author, contents and language features of the source text and the reasons for choosing it.The second chapter introduces the explanation and requirements of communicative translation theory. The third chapter describes the translation process, including pre-translation preparations, while translation process and post-translation editing. The fourth chapter is case analysis, which is the key part of this report.Under the guidance of communicative translation theory, typical cases are explained from the lexical, syntactic and textual levels. The translator focuses on the translation of words and sentences by using some translation skills such as conversion of part of speech, division, embedding and others. In addition, the translator also uses the addition of conjunctions, ellipsis and other skills to enhance the cohesion and coherence of the discourse. The fifth chapter is conclusion, which summarizes the gains and deficiencies in translation practice.Through this translation practice, the translator has a deeper understanding of the importance of improving climate conditions, and the understanding and application of communicative translation theory have been further improved. On the basis of combining theory with practice, the translator also summarizes the translation ideas and the rules of applying translation skills suitable for this kind of text.
