David Lodge(1935—)is a famous contemporary British novelist and literary critic.His Changing Places,Small World and Nice Work are called Campus Trilogy,which are Lodge’s representative works.Campus Trilogy focus on scholar groups and show readers the true appearance of contemporary British college life.One of the characteristics of David Lodge’s creation is that he is both a writer and a critic.He is good at integrating literary theory into novel creation,using various literary skills to construct novels.On the one hand,his Campus Trilogy reflects the basic characteristics of popular culture at the content level of his works.And on the other hand,he adopts the collage technique of postmodernism to structure his novels,At the same time,the Campus Trilogy inherits the excellent tradition of realistic literature,possesses some basic characteristics of realistic literature,and also has the characteristic of modernism literature.It is concerned about the destruction of nature by factories,and uses the mythological prototype theory commonly used in modernism literature.With an absorb of different literary theories and techniques,Lodge not only demonstrates his superb artistic skills,but also make the novel humorous,achieving an artistic effect that appeals to both refined and popular tastes.This paper reads the text of the Campus Trilogy from the perspective of.cultural,analysis from the text reappearance to the formal skills,step by step.The thesis is divided into five parts.The introduction mainly introduces David Lodge’s creation and research status,as well as the relevant background,main concepts and the development of cultural theory.From the first to the third chapter are the main body and the key point of this article.The first chapter analyzes the corrupt life of scholars in the postmodern society of Campus Trilogy from the content level,and explains the postmodern cultural characteristics in the novel from the two angles of"the lack of deep meaning" and "the disappearance of emotion".The second chapter analyzes the the novel’s inherit modernism and realistic literature tradition.Firstly,analyze the overall realistic features of the novel,such as complete plot,faithful reflection of social history,detailed and vivid details,etc.Then it analyzes the modernist perspective adopted in the novel,and the application of the mythological prototype theory in the novel.The third chapter analyzes how the novel achieves integration between the high-culture and the popular-culture.Firstly,it integrates various elements of popular literature into the novel through the innovation of the genre.And then takes the author’s extensive knowledge,profound theoretical foundation,and exquisite novel skills as the basis,mastering various art forms and creative techniques such as collage.Utilize collage in good taste,and expresses rich connotation in a vulgar form.In summary,Lodge’s Campus Trilogy demonstrates a strong sense of humanistic care and social mission.The novel as a whole still conforms to the framework of realism and has a distinct sense of social criticism.By analyzing the characteristics of realism and modernism in novels,we can appreciate Lodge’s profound literary attainment and solid theoretical foundation,and have a clearer understanding of Lodge’s intention of novel creating and his cultural attitude.
