| With the new round of basic education curriculum reform in China focusing on advocating student active engagement in the classroom,the importance of student active engagement in the classroom is widely recognized,and more and more teachers are paying attention to student engagement in their classroom.However,in the actual English classroom in the majority of township junior high schools,the phenomenon of neglecting student engagement still prevails.In view of this,this study investigates the status quo of student engagement in the English classroom in township junior high school,analyzes the problems and causes of student engagement in the English classroom in township junior high school,and puts forward corresponding suggestions for improvement.In this study,195 students in Y Junior High School of Weifang,Shandong Province were investigated by applying three research methods: questionnaire,classroom observation,and interview to explore the status quo of student engagement in the English classroom in township junior high school.Three research questions were proposed:(1)What is the status quo of student engagement in the English classroom in township junior high school?(2)What are the main problems of student engagement in the English classroom in township junior high school?(3)What are the causes of problems of student engagement in the English classroom in township junior high school?The main findings were as follows:(1)The overall situation of student engagement in the English classroom in township junior high school was positive.Specifically,the behavioral engagement of student was better than the cognitive engagement,and the cognitive engagement was better than the affective engagement.(2)The main problems of student engagement in the English classroom in township junior high school were: less time for student engagement,single form of student engagement,low initiative of student engagement,and lack of the ability to question actively.(3)The causes for the problems of student engagement in the English classroom in township junior high school were: unreasonable allocation of classroom time,single form of teaching activities,outdated teaching concepts and single teaching method,and restrictions of traditional teacher-student relationship.In response to the findings,this study proposed suggestions for improving student engagement in the English classroom in township junior high school in terms of teachers and students,respectively:(1)For teachers,allocate classroom time reasonably to improve the efficiency of English classroom teaching,increase English classroom activities to diversify teaching activities,change the traditional concept of classroom teaching and improve teaching methods,establish a cordial teacher-student relationship and encourage students to question.(2)For students,improve the initiative to engage in the English classroom and improve the ability to use learning strategies. |
