Abstract/Summary:
Stock news is a kind of financial discourses about the stock market, which functions as a barometer that reflects the operation of the capital market.Besides, stock news has the dual characteristics of objectivity and subjectivity because of its immediate feedback of the stock market and the inclusion elements of stock evaluation.Practically, analyzing this type of discourse from the perspective of appraisal theory is helpful to identify the real data reported and to judge the credibility of the commentator’s assertion.Theoretically, this study expands and refines the research of news discourse, extending it to financial discourse variants, and it also provides reference for the relevant research of appraisal theory.Guided by Martin’s appraisal theory, this research focuses on the engagement resources dispersed in two authoritative Chinese and foreign newspapers, namely China Daily and Wall Street Journal.Stock news corpus are selected with equal word count between January2020 and June 2020.Besides,with the help of the linguistic statistical software UAM Corpus Tool and the new-generation corpus software Lancs Box,this study explores the frequencies and distribution patterns of engagement resources in the stock news of China Daily and Wall Street Journal through quantitative and qualitative analysis,in an attempt to find the similarities and differences of distribution of engagement resources between two media, and to reveal the ideologies, positions and attitudes hidden behind the Chinese and American media within the social, political and economic contexts. It is found that there are similarities and differences in the distribution of engagement resources in the stock news between Chinese and American media. Both sides cover a large number of rich engagement resources and are more inclined to use more expansion resources. However, the American media tends to use more dialogic contract resources, mainly including counter resources and deny resources. While Chinese media tend to use more expansion resources, mainly consisting of acknowledge resources.Such similarities and differences in the choice of engagement resources in stock news are closely related to the ideological differences between the two countries to some extent. The research is based on the construction of the stock news corpus and the statistical analysis of engagement resources by means of the software analysis, which is a challenging research attempt. In this way,the author combines the knowledge reserves of International Economics and Trade for undergraduate with the professional knowledge of foreign linguistics for postgraduate.Due to the limitations of time and research capabilities, there is still room for improvement in terms of corpus selection and research paradigms and so on.
