Military receptions are usually initiated by the military attaché’s offices of the embassies in China, and leaders of our military and foreign military attachés are invited to attend. The main form of interpreting adopted on such occasions is consecutive interpreting. It emphasizes the social nature and thus confronts interpreters with many challenges, including the uncertainty of the service target and the content, the multiplicity of interpreters’ roles, and the need to master necessary diplomatic etiquette. This report takes the C-E consecutive interpreting of the meeting between PLA and Romanian military leaders in Romanian Armed Force’s Day reception as the research object. The background information,characteristics,pre-interpreting preparation, interpreting process and post-assessment are introduced. With the application of the Approach to Translation as Adaptation and Selection, failures and successes of adaptation and selection tactics are analyzed, and findings and solutions are also provided on the basis of previous analysis. The Approach to Translation as Adaptation and Selection contends that translation is a cyclic alternation of constant self-adjustment and optimizing options.Professor Hu engshen applied this theory to interpreting studies and held that interpreters should adapt to the “interpretational eco-environment” consisting of discourse, culture, society, speakers, listeners and audience and etc.Interpreting “selections” based on the principles of “multi-dimensional adaptation and adaptive selection” should be made aligned with the on-spot condition of interpreting. The report analyzes the interpretational eco-environment according to the research object, summarizes the linguistic and pragmatic characteristics of the interpreting materials, examines the successful “adaptive selections” in the interpreting task, and proposes three effective strategies to promote communication, namely additional explanation, intercultural paraphrase and selective simplification. It also summarizes the failures of “adaptation” including, bilingual incompetence, failures of intercultural awareness as well as facilitating communication efficiency.Based on the analysis, the report offers suggestions for future improvement including enhancement of bilingual ability, acquaintance with the direction and content of preparation, improvement of the mental buildup and immediate response ability. The report attempts to effectively analyze the case in order to provide military foreign affair interpreters with experience and reference for similar activities. |
