| Guided by Peter Newmark’s translation theory,this report explores how to organically combine the semantic translation strategy with the communicative translation strategy based on the text type of the source text Loveless(Excerpts)written by a British woman novelist Alice Osman.Newmark’s translation strategies are based on his text type theory.He divided texts mainly into the expressive type,the informative type and the vocative type.The expressive type emphasizes the expressive function of language,mainly inclusive of serious literary works(lyrics,short stories,novels,drama,etc.).The informative type eyes on conveying information,knowledge and facts,mainly inclusive of teaching materials,academic reports,newspaper and magazine articles,papers and so on.The vocative type strengthens the affective and persuasive function,mainly inclusive of notices,brochures,advertisements,popular novels and so on.He pointed out that the semantic translation strategy is mainly suitable for the expressive type texts,while the communicative translation strategy for the informative type texts and the vocative type texts.He further suggested that the semantic translation strategy attaches great significance to the original author and the original text,hence strives to preserve the unique language expression habits and style of the source text.The communicative translation strategy emphasizes the receptive effect of the target version,hence focuses on using smooth target language to transmit the content of the source text.Of course,there is no text type with absolutely a single function,so when choosing translation strategies,we need to make choices according to specific utterances.Loveless as a serious novel,belongs to the expressive type,so the semantic translation strategy should be the first choice supplemented by the communicative translation strategy.Based on this principle,this translation practice report focuses on the Chinese translation of taboos and long sentences.The frequent use of taboos constitutes the stylistic characteristics of the work,which should be retained as much as possible in translation,hence the adoption of the semantic translation strategy.But due to the subtlety of taboos,euphemistic expressions are also a good choice as a method under the communicative translation strategy.For the Chinese translation of long English sentences,the communicative translation strategy is preferred so as to change the long and complicated English sentences into shorter and fluent Chinese clauses or sentence,so sentence breaking and re-reorganization is frequent.In other words,faithfulness in content and domestication in syntax is often adopted.This report proposes the semantic translation strategy supplemented by the communicative translation strategy as a basic strategy for the Chinese translation of English literary works,which is of a little bit innovative significance to the application of Newmark’s translation theory. |
