Under the guidance of Translation Memetics,this translation report targets translation practice of Ancient Academy,one of the series of Chinese cultural knowledge readers and aims to discuss the translation strategies of the academic names of academies in ancient China,culture-loaded words related to ancient Chinese education,as well as complex sentence patterns and textual cohesion in the original text of the translation practice.Guided by translation memetics,this research is established in the four norms of expectation,communication,accountability and relation proposed by Chesterman based on Toury’s translation norms,conducted by the method of exemplification to study the translation strategies at the phonetic,lexical,sentence and textual levels of Ancient Academy with the assistance of the strategy memes of Translation Memetics.At first,as for ancient academy names,reign titles,ancient official titles,historical events and cultural loaded words of academies,all of these are analyzed with strategies such as transliteration with annotation,transliteration with literal translation,information change,and visibility change.Meanwhile,for non-subject sentences,which are discussed by using the addition of subject,passive voice and other methods.In terms of sentences involving ancient books and four-character expressions,they are translated by adding necessary content and omitting secondary information.Moreover,for long and complicated sentences,the strategy memes of unit shift and sentence structure change are adopted to accord with foreign readers’ expression habits.Finally,in order to achieve the cohesion and coherence of discourse,supplementary translation strategies like using pronouns,relative pronouns and adding logical connectors are discussed at the level of discourse.In conclusion,the research suggests that norm memes and strategy memes in translation memetics can guide the practical research on the translation of informative texts concerning China’s academy culture to a certain extent and provide a feasible test method for examining the correctness and accuracy of translators’ interpretation and expression of culture-loaded words concerning academies.
