A C-E Translation Report Of Fishing Folklore In Taihu Lake Area(Excerpt) From The Perspective Of Cultural Translation Theory

Boasting a long history and rich connotations,fishing custom in Taihu Lake area is a valuable folk cultural heritage,with unique regional characteristics and historical value.However,with changes of the times and the booming of social economy,the production and lifestyle of contemporary fishermen from Taihu Lake area have undergone drastic changes.The custom of fishermen from Taihu Lake that calls the boat home and lives by fishing for thousands of years is on the brink of extinction,and the inheritance of historical records related to fishermen from Taihu Lake is confronted with a serious crisis.This translation report is excerpted from the Fishing Folklore in Taihu Lake Area.The book,based on rescuing and sorting out the unique but endangered fishing customs and folk culture,includes quite a few expressions for fishery,culture-loaded words,proverbs of fishing family as well as classical style of writing.It also contains various rhetorical devices such as pun,metaphor,onomatopoeia.Given that the cultural translation theory has strong applicability to it,the report will take the cultural translation theory as the theoretical guidance to discuss the translation strategies of folk culture.Adopting the method of illustration,this report presents a discussion of translation strategies of expressions for fishery,culture-loaded words,subject-less sentences and rhetorical devices in Fishing Folklore in Taihu Lake Area from three aspects: words,sentences and rhetoric.Studies have shown that,for expressions for fishery and culture-loaded words,literal translation plus annotation,transliteration plus annotation and paraphrase are used;as for the sentences without subject,long and complex sentences,addition and rewriting are adopted;in view of the rhetorical devices such as pun,metaphor,onomatopoeia,the methods of literal translation plus annotation,transliteration plus annotation,corresponding and conversion are applied.Studies believe that the cultural translation theory can effectively guide the translation practice of text with folk characteristics,and convey the cultural connotation while retain the exotic flavor,so as to better introduce Chinese folk culture to foreign readers.
