Since 2014,the new college entrance examination has been sweeping across China.English writing has risen from 25 to 40 points on this new examination with an extra continuation task added.This indicates that a higher value has been placed on the students’ language output ability and that writing teaching should be given more weight to.In 2018,Wang Chuming further put forward an enhanced version of continuation task,namely comparative continuation,which can provide a complete reading text and fit to different genres.Based on this,this paper intends to apply comparative continuation into high school English writing classroom to investigate its teaching strategies and to figure out the following two research questions.1)What is the effect of comparative continuation teaching on senior high school students’ attitude and motive towards English writing?2)What is the effect of comparative continuation teaching on senior high school students’ English writing proficiency?This study adopts a quantitative research approach.It firstly introduces the concept of comparative continuation and reviews its development — from the emergence of the length approach,of the principle of learning together and using together,of the formal proposal of continuation task,and finally to the proposal of comparative continuation.Additionally,this paper also reviews the relevant research findings.Second,In order to verify the instructional effectiveness of comparative continuation,two classes are selected to conduct a three-month teaching experiment with the experimental class taught by comparative continuation and the control class taught by topic writing.After the experiment,post-questionnaire and post-test are carried out in two classes and SPSS 25.0 is used to analyze the data collected from questionnaires and tests.In addition,in the course of the experiment,this paper presents the teaching strategies of comparative continuation from three aspects:selecting reading materials,targeting comparative elements based on genre,and designing logical plots.Data analyses find that comparative continuation is an effective way to improve students’ attitude and motivation toward English writing.It also can improve students’ writing proficiency and render their writing much more characteristic of native English.This study aims to shed light on English writing teaching in high schools. |
