Saul Bellow, who won the Nobel Prize in 1976,is an outstanding novelist in American literature and is regarded as the most critical writer after Faulkner and Hemingway. The Adventures of Augie March is Bellow’s masterpiece, which establishes his superior and unshakable position in the history of American literature.Augie’s rebellion against oppression and the pursuit of love and freedom vividly illustrates the construction of his subjectivity and intersubjectivity. Most studies on The Adventures of Augie March focus on themes, characters, and narration but lack the macroscopic perspective to analyze the construction of subjectivity and intersubjectivity for heroin Augie.Based on Marx’s theory of subjectivity and Habermas’ communicative action theory of intersubjectivity, the thesis analyzes Augie’s subjectivity and intersubjectivity construction.Augie’s resistance against oppression underlines Bellow’s concern for the spiritual crisis of modern people.Besides,Augie’s pursuit of equality, love, and freedom in the construction of intersubjectivity contains Bellow’s equal thoughts about the relationship between man and society, man and nature, emphasizing his respect for universal values such as freedom and love.Augie persistently pursues a meaningful life in rebellion and finally finds the axis of life-truth,love,peace,and respect has positive significance to modern people under the oppression of instrumental rationality and spiritual crisis. What’s more, the construction of Augie’s subjectivity and intersubjectivity reflects Bellow’s best wish to build a harmonious society with mutual respect and win-win cooperation. The thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter briefly introduces Bellow’s life experience, significant works, and studies on Bellow and The Adventures of Augie March at home and abroad. The end of the chapter will emphasize the significance of the research and the layout of the thesis. The second chapter is the theoretical framework, analyzing the characteristics and historical background of subjectivity and intersubjectivity, briefly introducing Marx’s theory about subjectivity and Habermas’ communicative action mode on intersubjectivity. The third chapter analyzes Augie’s subjectivity construction and concludes that his subjective consciousness gradually matures in the process of oppression-awakening-resistance.The fourth chapter focuses on the construction of intersubjectivity.Augie respects others and longs for love and freedom, which helps him get rid of the spiritual crisis, find the true meaning of life and complete the construction of intersubjectivity. The fifth chapter is the conclusion, summarizing the construction process of Augie’s subjectivity and intersubjectivity, pointing out the theoretical value and practical significance of Augie’s subjectivity and intersubjectivity construction.
