A Multi-Dimensional Study On Russian Compound Words

In recent years,Russian compound words,which were rarely used in the past,have become increasingly popular among native Russian speakers.However,until now,Russian compound words have not yet received enough attention and they remain poorly studied both in Russia and in China.This thesis carries out a multi-dimensional study on the categories of Russian compound words,as well as their graphic,morphological,typological features and basic functions.The results of this research have vital theoretical value not only for the study of Russian word formation and lexicology,but also for the study of the current situation of the Russian language and its active process.It also has great significance in terms of enriching the theory of language typology.In addition,the research results of this thesis can help Chinese students better understand and use Russian compound words,better understand the current situation and development of Russian vocabulary,providing certain reference value for Russian teaching in China and lexicography.The novelty of this thesis lies in the tips as follows.1.To make a new interpretation of the term "Russian compound words" and explain the main reasons for their activation in modern Russian language;2.To classify Russian compound words according to various criteria and identify their graphic,morphological,typological features and basic functions;3.This thesis compiles a list of Russian compound words,which contains more than 310 example words.Most of these words are new Russian compound words that have just appeared and have not lost their freshness and particularity.Based on the theories of Russian word formation,Russian lexicology,Russian grammar and language typology,this thesis makes a multi-dimensional study of Russian compound words by using the methods of description,comparison,analysis,classification and interpretation.Firstly,this thesis defines the concept of "Russian compound words" and analyzes the reasons why these words are becoming more and more active in modern Russian.Secondly,this thesis classifies Russian compound words according to the lexical,semantic,syntactic and etymological standards.Thirdly,this thesis discusses the typical features of Russian compound words,including graphic,morphological and analytical features.Finally,this thesis expounds the main functions of Russian compound words,including nominative,expressive and compressive functions.The main conclusions of our research are as follows.1.The term "Russian compound words" can be defined as compound words with hyphenated spelling,formed by word composition and consisting of two(or more)separately formed words.2.The increase in the number of Russian compound words and the increase in the frequency of their use can be explained by the dramatic changes in Russian society and the tendency towards the democratization of the Russian language.3.Russian compound words can be mainly classified according to morphological,semantic,syntactic and genetic criteria.According to the morphological criterion,Russian compound words are divided into two groups: 1)Russian compound words which are formed with the same parts of speech;2)Russian compound words which are formed with different parts of speech.According to the semantic criterion,five groups of Russian compound words can be distinguished: 1)Russian compound words denoting a person and his profession or title;2)Russian compound words denoting a person and his specific trait;3)Russian compound words denoting an animal / plant and its appearance;4)Russian compound words denoting an object and its function;5)Russian compound words denoting an object and its feature.According to the syntactic criterion,Russian compound words can be divided into two groups: 1)Russian compound words formed by a compositional relationship between the components;2)Russian compound words formed by a subordinate relationship between components.According to the genetic criterion,this thesis identifies the following two groups of Russian compound words: 1)native Russian compound words;2)Russian compound words with borrowed components.4.The characteristic features of Russian compound words can be identified by analyzing their graphical appearance,grammatical features and analytical features.The graphic appearance of Russian compound words is mainly manifested in hyphenated spelling instead of continuous spelling and the use of foreign language elements in various graphic forms.The grammatical features of Russian compound words are manifested in the process of determining their gender and part of speech.To determine the gender of Russian compound words,a semantic and structural analysis should be applied.The part of speech of Russian compound words is determined with the help of morphological,semantic and syntactic analysis of their components.Analytical features of Russian compound words are found in the following points: 1)some prepositive components of Russian compound words are indeclinable;2)more and more components of Russian compound words are borrowed from English;3)some prepositive components-nouns perform the function of adjectives and they were called as analytical adjectives.5.Russian compound words in the process of their use mainly realize nominative,expressive and compressive functions.The nominative function of Russian compound words allows people to give names to new complex objects,phenomena and concepts,and to satisfy the needs of people to use new lexical units.The expressive function of Russian compound words is mainly manifested in Russian compound nouns or adjectives.Components-nouns or components-adjectives with vivid expressiveness carry out an expressive function and help authors or speakers to express their aesthetic feeling,emotional state and subjective assessment.The compressive function of Russian compound words is realized with the help of components of English origin,structural brevity and semantic richness.
