During my graduate study in translation-related courses,I have participated in the translation project of A century history of Iwanami Shoten(3 volume)chaired by my tutor. The series is the 100th anniversary commemorative series of Iwanami Shoten. With publishing activities as the main line,it reviews the development of the Iwanami Shoten from 1913 to 2013,brings the history, literature and art of Japan’s Taisho,Showa and Heisei periods into the reader’s field of vision. In this Chinese translation practice report, the author chose the birth of“General Education”Chapter3 as the translation text.Volume1 describes the struggling pace of Iwanami Shoten since 1913 to 1930s in a novel perspective and plain language, and reproduces how it grew up.Moreover,Chapter 3 takes the publication of the philosophy series as the entry point, conveying the connotation of"education"and the social background of its birth to readers. From the perspective of language style of the text,it is a rigorous social science text as a whole, but there is no lack of literary works, publicity advertisements and other quotations with various styles. In terms of content, there is a large number of cultural projects related to Japanese history and so on.How to convey these cultural items and their implied cultural significance to readers is the difficulty of this translation practice. In order to solve this problem, the author started from the point of view that"translation behavior contains culture significance"proposed by Polysystem Theory. This translation practice report were composed of four chapters.Chapter1introduced the subject of this translation and the main content of the translated text.Chapter2 introduced the main content, the development process of the theory, and explained the difficulties of this translation practice.Chapter3 analyzed the problems and countermeasures in this translation practice.Translation strategies of cultural items were divided into three categories:supplement, footnote and conversion.Chapter4discussed the translation issues that were easily neglected under the Polysystem Theory, and analyzed them from the aspects of literal expression and sentence structure.Through the above analysis the following conclusions can be drawn.First,A large number of expressions with Japanese characteristics were brought into the target reader’s vision, and the practice proved the Polysystem Theory had certain applicability to the translation of such texts.Second, taking full consideration of the readability of the target text and the acceptance of the source language culture by the target language readers, the method of supplement, footnote and transformation was adopted for analysis. However, the Polysystem Theory ignored the language differences in vocabulary, sentence structure, therefore the translator needs to adopt the vocabulary and sentence structure that the target language readers are familiar with.On the basis of previous research, this report pointed out the problems that translators should pay attention to when there is a difference between the cultural image of the source language and the cultural image of the target language in translation practice, used the Polysystem Theory to solve the problems, and expanded the application of the theory in translation practice.
