| Popular science translation,especially the improvement of the translated version,is worth attention.Professor Guo Jianzhong’s “Four Characteristics of Popular Science Translation” provides effective conceptual support for the practice of popular science translation.This report selects several chapters of The Hidden Life of Trees as the source text,and aims to highlight such following features as scientificity,literariness,popularity,and interestingness in popular science translation.By commenting on the difficulties and essential elements encountered in the translation process at multiple levels,this report seeks to produce a translation that embodies these four characteristics.Scientificity is the primary characteristic of popular science texts,which is mainly reflected in the rigorous use of terms and careful logical processing.Popular science discourse is the unity of science and art.Chinese idioms and rhetoric devices can help to enhance the artfulness of translation.Popular science works seek to convey scientific and technological knowledge in an easily understandable way,so metaphors that affect understanding should be properly manifested and explained in translation.Some humorous expressions for the purpose of interestingness need to be retained in translation.This report finds that Guo Jianzhong’s Four Characteristics of Popular Science Translation can provide conceptual support for the improvement of translation.The thesis also analyzes and summarizes the necessary qualities of a popular science translator in his/her translating & revision process and some specific methods used in translating popular science works,such as consulting professional dictionaries and splitting long sentences,using four character idioms and rhetoric,making implicit metaphor explicit,and adding witty colloquial language and parentheses. |
