Abstract/Summary:
Humans can capture a large amount of visual information by gazing briefly, but with great difficulty for current computers. How the visual system processes visual information is currently a widely studied area of interest in cognitive science and artificial intelligence. An important direction of research on visual information processing mechanisms is the study of visual cognitive mechanisms of art paintings. Most of the current relevant studies have been conducted on consciousness, but there is a relative lack of studies on the unconscious of art painting. This thesis will investigate the influence of art painting style on the visual cognitive process from an unconscious perspective with the help of the continuous flash suppression(CFS)paradigm. In visual cognitive studies based on painting style,it is necessary to compare styles while keeping other characteristics of the stimulus consistent to the greatest extent possible. The style transfer algorithm can assign the style of an artwork to a picture to generate a stylized image. In this thesis, stylized images with six different styles were generated with the help of this algorithm, and the following three studies were conducted using these images.First, the study was conducted with style as a factor, using different stylized pictures as target stimulus for breaking continuous flash suppression(breakingCFS)experiment to investigate the effect of different artistic styles on unconscious visual perception.Two-alternative forced choice(2-AFC)experiments were also conducted to investigate the effect of art style on conscious visual perception and to compare whether the effect was consistent.Second,to further investigate the effect of the experimental task on the study results, the study methodology was modified appropriately. The traditional b-CFS experiment was interspersed with trials without the masks to compare the conscious and unconscious visual processing of the target stimulus of different painting styles when the task was "seeing";the CFS paradigm was combined with the 2-AFC experiment, and a trial without mask stimulus was set up to compare the conscious and unconscious visual perceptions when the task was "detection".Thirdly,we compared the conscious part of the traditional 2-AFC experiment with the CFS paradigm and the 2-AFC experiment to analyze the effect of picture presentation on the study results. It was found that different art styles had different effects on awareness and unawareness, and the effects of art styles were not consistent on the condition with暗淡without awareness. The different experimental tasks had small but significant effects on unawareness of visual cognition. We also found the effects of picture presentation on the forced choice task. This study explores the effect of artistic style on unconscious visual cognition, which helps to understand the mechanism of unconscious visual cognition and provides useful data for the fields of art-related artificial intelligence and cognitive neuroscience.
