The research on the movement of domestic goods in 1920 s and 1930 s has been an important chapter in the history of modern Chinese design.Taking the "Women’s Year of Domestic Goods" in 1934 as the research object,this paper attempts to restore the gender representation in Chinese design culture in the 1930 s from the perspective of gendered design,following the history of design.This study analyzes the male discourse in the field of production,the female consciousness in the field of consumption,and the gender division in the material world of children.Firstly,the gender discourse in the field of production is discussed,and the main expression of gender representation of binary opposition in the production of domestic goods is discussed under the background of nationalism.Secondly,by examining the media such as newspapers,magazines,advertisements and products in 1934,this paper discusses the new consumption pattern and new gender characteristics developed by women in the consumption context of domestic goods.Finally,from the division of children’s material world,such as toys,clothing and other articles of daily use,to examine how the social gender of children in the Republic of China is shaped by domestic goods.The design culture generated in the background of "Women’s Domestic Product Year" in1934 refracts for us the exploration road of modern Chinese design from national nationality to material production,and then to the gender discourse and identity exploration in daily life.Through the representation of "gender",we can have a deeper understanding of the deep structure,contradiction and historical motivation behind the exploration of early modern design in China. |
